Garden Autumn Damask Rose Care

Autumn Damask Rose Care

This rose has edible flowers.

Full Sun, Soil Moist and Well Drained, 3 inch layer of mulch.
Water once a week, if hot twice.

1.
Give them some general fertilizer in spring and rose food in mid-summer and cover the soil at their bottom with organic mulch and they will be happy. Some pruning should be done in late winter or early spring. Just cut out the weak or diseased stems and enough just to establish a good plant shape.

2.
Damask roses should never be cut back. Just thin out when crowded and cut off the tips of you want to lightly prune and shape. Pruning bush roses should be done in the spring, just before growth starts. First, remove any dead wood.

Prune once-blooming Damask roses immediately after they finish blooming, unless you want a display of rose hips in the fall. Some Damasks cultivars will have complete cane dieback if you prune them during the winter. A rule of thumb is to avoid pruning in the first two years, and thereafter simply remove dead or diseased wood and lightly prune long canes to shape up the plant. Cut any dead heads in late summer. Damask rose bushes are resistant to pests and disease, but help prevent problems by allowing adequate spacing and good air circulation, using mixed plantings in your flower beds, and watering sufficiently.

 Avoid pruning in the fall.
